Scotland had monasteries and monks from around the time of St Columba at Iona (who died in 597), but it is from the reign of King Malcolm III and his wife, St Margaret, in the late eleventh century, that Scotland fell into line with the rest of Europe and its monasteries started to contain the iconic hooded figures you see here. Scotland’s major medieval abbeys dominated the kingdom and to name an illustrious few, there were Holyrood, Arbroath, Deer, Crossraguel, Paisley, Dundrennan, Glenluce, Sweetheart. Whithorn, Balmarino, Dunfermline, Inchcolm, Beauly, Newbattle, Pluscardin, Coldingham, Dryburgh, Melrose, Scone, and many more. Monks were an integral part of the kingdom.
Stands 8.5cm in height and is cast from high quality 100% lead-free pewter.
Presented on a base of polished wood, using off-cuts from our bagpipe workshops.
